Beginning demolition for the interior of the former Hotel Marshall in downtown Sacramento caused a bit of consternation this week.

Concerned over the possibility of building failure, city police on Tuesday ordered the overnight closure of Seventh and L streets around the project site on the northwest corner of that intersection.

A crane began tearing out the shuttered Marshall’s rooms, but bracing was expected to leave two exterior walls in place.
